There is lyric in a Jimmy Buffet line that says: “Don't try to describe the ocean if you've never seen it…”
Today I was, as I usually am, fascinated when in course of demoing ActiveWords I show someone how our scripting language works. This is the 8th item in our Add Wizard. Most people have this very vaugue idea about what scripting is or means.
When I show them how simple it is to create a script and how much power results, they are generally speechless. But, it’s like the Buffet line above. Until they see it, they don’t believe it.
So, I went back and grabbed the E-Mail that we send out about scripting and have listed the key points below:
- You can review the details of the scripting language by triggering the ActiveWord "help", click "Usage Tips/Scripting", and then click "Scripting ActiveWords Behavior". Examples of each command are included. It is also available here: http://www.activewords.com/scriptinglanguage.html.
-
The scripting language is similar in structure to HTML. Many scripting commands simulate keystrokes, so, whatever events you can perform from the keyboard can be scripted as ActiveWord commands.
-
Here are some tips to learn about ActiveWords scripting:
-
1. Review "Scripting Basics for PLUS and ENTERPRISE Users" here: http://www.activewords.com/demos.html
-
2.. Install some of the ActiveWords PLUS applications http://www.activewords.com/plusapplications.html and look at the Action fields to see how they are created.
-
3. Review the ActiveWords Forum: http://www.activewords.com/forum/. There are lots of examples there. Please join the forum and contribute your scripting questions and ideas.
If you have any specific needs we would be happy to help if you define what you want. We learn the greatest things from our users, and they have lead to our building all kinds of cool stuff!
So, bring it on….!
Buzz, as an ActiveWords user for about a year now, I only recently ventured into the world of scripting (I was pushed there when I saw a badass script written by a friend of mine).
I only *thought* AW was powerful before. It is amazing now. I recommend that all AW users take a dip in the scripting pool as soon as possible - it'll be worth it.

This is a great resource! I have found the applications particularly helpful, especially the auto complete/spellcheck.
Thanks Buzz.
