The great team at Microsoft that invited me to be part of the MSN Search Champs just released their Beta for Desktop Search. You can get a copy here and read all about it here, and I am sure the blogosphere is going to be all over it.
I have been using it for about 10 days. I had a couple of problems with the first couple builds, but the team immediately responded to my issues, and made some subtle changes, and it is working great.
I have a ThinkPad T-41, and it took me a couple of hours to index everything, but once my drive was fully indexed it has been terrific.
What I think is striking is the UI, and how much broader the search features are.
I have been a huge fan of Lookout, and I think this is a huge improvement over Lookout, and huge only in that it reflects the core ideas that Lookout built, and expanded them as only Microsoft can.
I wish the Search team every success, as I am thrilled to have been a small part, trilled with their reaction to our comments, and as a garden variety user, excited about the functionality that this brings to me to use every day.
I had requested some programming help so that we could build an ActiveWords agent for this tool, and I got it last night, our programmers have it, so stay tuned, and maybe we can build a great agent that will make the MSN Toolbar Suite available anywhere!

Buzz, your trackbacks don't appear to be working (of course the problem could be between the chair and the monitor on my end) but I referenced this post at http://www.jasonclarke.net/archives/2004/12/13/msn-desktop-search-beta/
