For my friends and those who read my writing, I must point towards the latest event on the Southeastern horizon, i.e. Frances!
Living through a hurricane less than three weeks ago, followed by about 10 miserable days of either no power or AC, and then no AC, the prospect of another hurricane just doesn't seem quite fair. (Ah, but the philosophers would say, life is not fair, get over it!)
When Charly was floating around out in the Carribean I really didn't think much about it. Alas, after many years of misses, the idea of a near knock-out punch wasn't something I saw coming. It was a little like a very, very big surprise.
Tonight the weather guys who got caught napping the last go around have become the rock stars of local TV.
While the Republican convention has not been pre-empted, I dare say that no one is paying much attention. Tonight when I came back from picking up some copies, the lines at the gas stations were long. Someone later told me that batteries were in short supply and one grocery store was out of bottled water.
A couple of months ago, I noted that oil prices had gotten high and I opined that I needed to find a way to short the oil market. I was told that I was crazy, and my friendly local stock broker refused to take my bet. Prices then promptly fell $7 a barrel. I then suggested that prices seem to low, and sought to go long, again same broker told me I was crazy, and the prices promptly spiked up about $14 a barrel.
Tonight I was mulling over how one might bet on the probability of a storm path. I doubt that is something that one might wager on. If the guys at NOAA are right, about 8:30 P.M. on Saturday night the Frances is going to walking down my street at about 15 mph headed WNW.
Wednesday I need to be in San Diego for DemoMobile! I just spoke to Delta, and they do have a plane leaving early. So, do I exit stage left, or hang around to enjoy the storm?
Reminds me a little of the guys at the Alamo. I am not sure that leaving early and returning to fight another day isn't a better plan.
Ahh, but WeatherBug is there to fill in the void. They are actually on their way down there to blog Frances.
