I have had the very good fortune to do some BizDev, e.g. Business Development work for local firm.
They have been kind enough to loan me an 24” iMac. Some initial thoughts…
As controlled and controlling as Apple is the “out of the box” experience is fairly remarkable.
As a Mac user from the 128k days I had it up and running in a few minutes, and from a UI perspective, I have used Macs often enough that there were no initial surprises.
The screen and the hardware are stunning.
Adding ram is a little tricky because you need the right kind of screwdriver.
Mixed feelings about the mouse, but I really like the keyboard! I think I may try the keyboard on other computers, see if it works.
Haven’t tried to plug my favorite printer in, so the jury is out.
Tomorrow’s (and probably many days after….) adventures include:
Installing Parallels
Installing Vista
Installing ActiveWords (what a surprise!) One of my goals is to see if I can script ActiveWords to launch Leopard, then use QuickSilver to launch Vista.
Installing Office
Getting all my music aggregated and ready to run!
Same for pictures….
Getting everything so much better backed up!
Getting stuff done!
From prior experience:
I have been very impressed with iMovie and iDVD. All of the video interviews I have done are in this format. (But….and there is always a but!) I need to do a greatest hits summary of the interviews, and this should be a challenge.
I have this idea that computer hardware should let you run the tools you need and prefer, not what the hardware vendors prefer.
I call it the “Burger King” metaphor, e.g. “Have it your way” and not have it their way, so stay tuned!

Welcome back from the dark and treacherous valley of the PC world. Our tech department reports that it spends 10% of its time repairing Macs and 80% of its time on PCs of all varieties. The remaining time must be devoted to coffee breaks and paper airplanes.

Well, I posted comment a few minutes ago, but the site kicked me the shins... I'll try again, not knowing if the previous will appear.

Welcome back from the dark and treacherous valley of the P.C. Our tech department reports that it spends about 10% of tech time dealing with MAC hardware and software problems but 80% on defective PC hardware and software glitches. I guess the remaining time is spent on coffee breaks and paper airplanes.
Best.

Buzz,
Ya gotta let us know how Parallels works! I'm ready to make the leap (Ok, I just miss ActiveWords a LOT!).
