As I drove from Palm Springs down to Irvine, I mulled over some ideas that I had encountered at Mobiltrax.
- Gerry Purdy is a very smart guy, who really understands the Mobile space, and who did an excellent job in hosting the event, and making sure that every detail was attended to.
- And now for the highlights….
- The idea that I will play games on a phone are not good!
- The idea that I will watch TV on a phone is not likely, and the idea that I will pay to watch TV on a phone is even less likely.
- The idea that I will get a SlingBox is very likely. Every time I encounter the SlingBox idea I like it more, although again, getting the signal to my phone isn’t something that I care about. Traveling and having access to your home content is a lovely idea. It occurred to me that in a perfect world, you could have access to a sling box on either the East or West coast, and adjust how you watch live programming accordingly.
- I was really intrigued with the data points from Rick Roesler of HP that Smart Phones run as fast as PIIs..running at 450 MHz, as I recall we built the first versions of ActiveWords on PIIs…running at 166 MHz.
- That the new phones coming from Palm, Nokia, and Motorola are very cool, now the test will be to get the costs down.
- That the team from Tropos network have a big opportunity ahead of them in rolling out their Metro Scale networks, and that the monopolists wire line companies and cable providers are going to do all in their power to stop them.
- That anyone who travels around this country without Microsoft Streets & Trips loaded on their computer is destined to get real lost. Unfortunately I don’t have the GPS module with me, as I would have loved to seen how it worked tonight as I drove from Palm Springs here..and
- The best schwag of the event was a simple carbiner with an led light from Magellan.
- That the level of interest in the Windows Mobile Platform is very high, and that Palm & Rim are going to really have to scramble to come up with something better.
- That I am not the only one looking for a smart Windows Mobile programmer, most of those at the event had that skill set on their immediate hire list.
Just did read your comments about mobil trax..
You are right.. Gerry is a smart man..
I have attended mobile Trax before and will again soon. Its a great project.
Comment.. For older folks change is hard.. unless you have the vision of what is yet to come. If you are that fortunate.. you will then be so excited you will think Santa is on his way!
I have been on the bleeding edge so long I at times think it will never come.. but now it is..
Yes you will watch movies on your cell phone! But it will not be feature length like you are acoustomed.. It will info on demand.. News you can use!
